Do Plants Really Purify the Air?

Green plants have always been popular with both homeowners and business owners, as integrating them into their design creates a more inviting space. However, there are many other claims that have been made about the benefits of green plants in recent years, including the fact that green plants can purify the air in enclosed indoor spaces.

There has been a concentrated effort to find ways to deliver improved indoor air quality since 2020, especially in commercial areas and places of work. With this in mind, let’s explore the science – do plants really purify air? And if so, how much of a change can realistically be expected?

The Science Behind Using Plants to Purify the Air

An Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report reveals that Americans spend up to 90% of their lives indoors. This is concerning for many reasons, not the least of which is that levels of pollutants can be up to five times higher indoors than out. Given these stats, it is vital to ensure that indoor air is as clean as possible. Of course, air purifiers can fill this need – but can green plants help in a more natural and organic way?

In general, air quality is impacted primarily by carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrous oxide. In addition to these gases are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are inherent in some of the everyday products and materials we find in homes and offices. Through photosynthesis, plants convert and neutralize exhaled carbon dioxide and also eliminate many gases from the air through absorption.

In 1989, NASA scientist Bill Wolverton posited that house plants may provide a “promising economical solution to indoor air pollution.”
The most harmful pollutants commonly occurring throughout indoor environments include trichloroethylene, formaldehyde, benzene, xylene, and ammonia. These pollutants can emanate from such standard products as paints and varnishes, paper bags, synthetic fabrics and dyes, carpets, and tobacco smoke. Window cleaners, all-purpose cleaners and floor waxes, all commonly utilized in building maintenance, also contribute to this problem.

When present in high enough concentrations, employees in proximity to these pollutants may experience dizziness, headaches, and nose, mouth, and throat irritation. When exposure continues over a long period, liver and kidney damage are also possible.

Did You Know? The results of NASA’s study revealed that one green plant species was especially effective at reducing and minimizing the levels of all five of these pollutants – the popular and beautiful peace lily (Spatiphyllum ‘Mauna Loa’). Florist’s chrysanthemums were also effective, but are less likely to be found in corporate environments. Although these two plants were the most effective when it came time to purify the air, many types of green plants have been shown to be capable of the same, including spider plants and pothos.

How Many Plants Are Needed to Purify the Air?

A standard in the industry is that two medium-to-large plants per every 100 square feet will begin to meaningfully improve the air quality. Multiple plants, plant installations, or a wall of plants, such as a living wall can begin to significantly enhance purification efforts.

Other Benefits of Green Plants

Since the pandemic, many office and commercial environments have invested in mechanical air purifiers to clean their air. Still, green plants can help to cleanse and purify the air from pollutants, while contributing other positive benefits for health and wellness.

For instance, studies have shown that the presence of green plants promotes a sense of calm, enhances overall well-being, and even improves focus and productivity. Not only that, but employee morale is significantly higher in workplaces that invest in natural and organic displays such as water features, green plant installations, and natural light.

There are many fantastic reasons to add green plants to your commercial, retail or corporate environment – but only one call to make to arrange it. Tropex is the Gulf Coast’s leading provider of plant installations and plant leasing. Call today to learn more about installing plants at your location or for your special event.
